Well... I don't know what the issue was actually, maybe just late in the evening. But the last thing I tried was restoring an older (phpBB) backup from ACP, but that resulted in the whole board becoming non-functional (just a 500 server errror). I gave it a night sleep, copied the most recent copy (from my backup server) to the active one (before trying to restore the older phpBB backup) and low and behold: attachments were back like normal.
I decided it might have failed after putting a fresh post under the latest phpBB version that I just had installed, but that also worked like normal.
I guess I'll never find out what triggered the attachments becoming 'faulty', but I do know:
Backup, backup, backup, backup!
Not just databases, phpBB snapshots, but also the whole phpBB-folder to other locations for restorting & testing purposes.![:)]( "Smile")
