[3.3.x] Support Forum • Excessive PHP script executions

Hi,

I'm not the most technically literate user so please bear with me.

I run a small phpBB (<800 users) hobbyist forum. We have a recurring problem - for the last year every few months we get flagged by our host (Fastcomet) for exceeding our php script executions (limit of 600k per month). In this case, we have hit 800k+ by mid-month. They tell me this is due to legitimate traffic - however on reviewing the stats, we average 15-25k executions a day, but on 11 June we had almost 600k in a 24 hour period.

Support says this is due to fauly php script:

"As you can see, these 607,000 pages were visited by authenticated users that are registered on your website and you have little to none bot activity, which reaffirms what our colleague said that there is nothing abnormal or no artificial behavior to be found here, just a misconfigured .php form".

Specifically it seems "/public_html/viewforum.php" has generated 400k+ executions.

So, how can I address this? I don't understand how most days its under 20k and then in one day it somehow generates this level of activity.

I've disabled all the extentions etc. I don't think we've modifed any of the core PHP pages/code (frankly I would not know how to).

I'm afaid I don't really understand PHP - I just installed the board on the server and have been running it without much trouble for 7 years. But this has me stumped - we can't afford to upgrade (again), and if I can't solve this I think I'm going to have to shut it down.

Hugely grateful for any ideas/pointers.

Thanks.
